The global village, characterized by the speed of decision-making, competition and real time communication, requires a staff selection, utilization and development approach that is targeted toward the achievement of specific strategic and operational objectives. For this reason, one of the core activities of the human capital management function is still sound job analysis and profiling of competence to perform optimally.

In addition, there is a need to look at job and competency profiling in relation to the South African labour dispensation. Employment Equity requires that not only qualifications and experience be considered in the employment of staff, but also the potential to become competent within a reasonable time. This implies that job and competency profiling should cater for “threshold” requirements and aspects pertaining to assessment should be aligned to support meaningful decision making in this regard.

Also, disability and reasonable accommodation requirements challenges the practitioner to ensure a meaningful balance between corporate ethics, management of compliance risk and optimization of human potential. Never has the job and competency profiling played a more crucial role in ensuring effective people management decisions.

The workshop is aimed at developing the following:

  • Understanding the international trends, strategic and legislative requirements for job and competency profiling
  • Understanding how job and competency profiling fits into the human capital management function and value creation process
  • Understanding how Employment Equity (specifically affirmative action measures and reasonable accommodation) affect job design and profiling
  • Understanding how ERP type systems facilitate the integration of job and competency profiling across the organisation
  • Application of the underlying principles required for the development of competency models
  • Application of the tools and techniques to develop job and competency profiles
  • Design, planning and roll out of interventions to implement job and competency profiling
