1. Cancellations
Should you be unable to attend, we will accept your written cancellation by no later than 7 working days prior to the start of the workshop,  in which event  a cancellation fee of 25% will be charged. Thereafter, we regret we are unable to refund any fees, although  in such cases  we would be happy to welcome a colleague who would substitute your attendance or keep the credit for a following workshop with the same monetary value. Please note that the cancellation fee of 25% will still apply in such event. All cancellations must please be confirmed in writing. 'No shows' on the dates of the workshop are still liable for the full payment. This clause also applies where we have received your registration form, invoiced you and awaiting your payment.
2. EES-SIYAKHA is not liable for any transportation or accommodation costs incurred related to the prospective attendance of an event that does not go ahead on the advertised date. The terms applicable in Clause 1 to cancellations received later than 7 working days prior to the start of the workshop will apply to any payments made in respect of events that do not go ahead for whatsoever reason.

Today all managers need to be equipped with current yet relevant cost control and budgeting tools. All managers also need to be equipped with concepts to achieve their business goals within the set time frame while maintaining reasonable forecasting for profit.

This is a two-day course, with a down-to-earth practical approach to the basic principles of strategy, budgeting and finance, and the how and the why of linking the elements to form a cohesive approach to budgeting.

  • Developing strategy: The game plan of the organisation to achieve its objectives
Session Two: Linking Budgets to Strategy through The Balanced Scorecard
The four-perspective framework of a business unit's Balanced Scorecard describes how the unit creates shareholder value through enhanced customer relationships driven by excellence in internal processes.

The four perspectives are as follows:

  • Financial: What are our shareholder expectations for financial performance?
  • Customer: To reach our financial objectives, how do we create value for our customers?
  • Internal Process: What processes must we excel at to satisfy our customers and shareholders?
  • Learning and Growth: How do we align our intangible assets, people, systems and culture to improve the critical processes?
Session Three: The Financial Perspective

Reviewing the accounting processes leading to the financial statements in the form of the:

  • Balance Sheet,
  • Income Statement
  • Statement of Changes in Equity
  • Cash Flow Statement
Day One: Afternoon session

Session Four: Financial Analysis and Ratio principles

Understanding the principles behind the ratio analysis covering:

  • Profitability ratios
  • Liquidity ratios
  • Efficiency ratios
  • Gearing Ratios
  • How the above ratios are formulated together in the Du Pont analysis to strengthen the budgeting plan
  • Case Study: Pick n Pay, flying in the face of convention

Day Two: Morning Session

Session Five: Capital Budgeting

Develop criteria for Capital Budgeting decisions on long term investment projects:
  • The concept of Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC)
  • The Time Value of Money
  • Forecasting Cash Flows
  • The Concept of Free Cash Flow
  • Case Study
Day Two: Afternoon session
Session Six: Costing and the behaviour of costs

Covering:       

  • Cost volume profit relationships
  • Break even analysis
  • Variance analysis

Session Seven: Budgeting

Covering:

  • Traditional Budgeting and implementing thereof
  • Advancement in budgeting approached and the “Beyond Budgeting” concepts

Conclusion and evaluations of the course


ABOUT YOUR EXPERT PRESENTER

Alex Nortje is an experienced facilitator, consultant and financial planner. He holds a degree in accounting (B Comm.), has a master’s degree in Business Leadership (MBL) from Unisa and has obtained a postgraduate diploma in financial planning from the University of the Free State (CFP).

Alex has had considerable experience in IT ( spent 18 years in the IT arena), as well as in the financial environment in marketing and sales management. Alex has spent the last eight years as a lecturer for various institutions, and has been and is currently actively involved with the MBA, MBL, MDP and FMP courses at the Post Graduate School for Business Leadership at Unisa.
